Risk Analyst

Hours:
Fulltime, 40 hours
Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The Position

As a Risk Analyst you will play an important role in safeguarding and enhancing the performance of our trading, refining, and fuel supply business. Acting as a key link between risk management and commercial teams, you will analyse complex trading positions, interpret market movements, and ensure financial performance is accurately captured and understood.

In this role, you will go beyond just reporting: you will provide insight, challenge assumptions, and actively contribute to better decision-making. You will work closely with traders, finance, and senior management, gaining a comprehensive view of the energy market and supply chain: from crude sourcing, refinery optimisation, logistics, biofuel blending, and customer sales. This exposure will allow you to understand how market fundamentals, operational realities, and trading strategies come together.

Your contributions will directly shape how the organisation manages risk by developing new analytical tools, enhancing and testing our software, or identifying efficiencies in workflows. This is a highly visible role with regular interaction with senior stakeholders, including traders and the VP Risk, and offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact in a fast-paced and evolving energy environment.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse trading books to understand exposure to market price movements;

  • Reconcile and attribute daily mark-to-market P&L movements to ensure control over financial reporting;

  • Collaborate with traders to investigate unexpected P&L outcomes and help resolve discrepancies;

  • Summarise and explain P&L movements over time, linking performance to positions and market developments;

  • Monitor exposures against limits and Delegations of Authority;

  • Develop new reports and analytical tools to generate business insights;

  • Support improvements to ETRM systems, including testing new releases;

  • Manage cost attributions, transfer pricing, and internal charges to ensure full transparency of performance;

  • Support and challenge commercial stakeholders to drive sound risk-reward decision-making;

  • Identify improvement opportunities and implement more efficient processes and ways of working;

  • Work closely with business control, performance reporting, and accounting to ensure accurate P&L reporting.

Your Profile

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a risk or product control role within banking, finance, commodities, oil, or energy sectors;

  • Basic understanding of accounting and financial reporting;

  • Familiarity with derivatives such as futures and swaps;

  • Intermediate level Excel skills;

  • Analytical and structured, with a strong attention to detail;

  • A curious mindset, willing to ask questions and challenge assumptions;

  • Reliable, accurate, and well-organised;

  • Proactive, motivated, and a strong team player;

  • Fluent in English, with strong communication skills.

    Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in maths, science, engineering, business, economics or a data subject;

  • Basic SQL and PowerBI skills;

  • Knowledge of commodities markets, forward curves, and physical trading concepts;

  • Understanding of FX exposure and hedging;

  • Understanding of risk metrics like Var, Drawdown and “Greeks”.

Our Offer

  • Understanding how and why markets move and explain these movements in terms of underlying fundamentals. You gain a great view of how physical commodities markets actually operate by working directly with those in the market;

  • Develop a deep understanding of the trading book strategies, assets and trade flows, and how they are reflected in our systems and reports;

  • Learning about biofuels, advanced feedstocks, coprocessing and other cutting edge emission reduction technologies. You make a real impact on carbon reduction;

  • Visibility of how the energy supply chain works: from crude sourcing, refinery optimization, cargo exports, inland barge & train logistics, biofuel blending, to customer fuel sales;

  • The chance to shape and improve processes, your ideas shape our future and you can make a direct impact on how we run our company;

  • An attractive workplace in the office in Rotterdam with development opportunities within an international, corporate environment;

  • Attractive salary structures, as well as a (partly) employer-financed pension and bike plan etc.;

  • Fun and supportive team environment that welcomes you to several social events.
