Hours: Fulltime, 40 hours
Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands / Stockholm or Göteborg, Sweden
The Position
As a Vetting Specialist, you will be responsible for evaluating vessel suitability and ensuring compliance with VAROPreem's safety, environmental, and operational standards. Working closely with vessel operators, inspectors, authorities, and internal stakeholders, you will review vetting requests, coordinate inspections, and provide expert guidance on maritime safety and compliance matters. This is one of the most specialized roles within VAROPreem, offering a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, where your professional judgment and technical expertise will be central to maintaining high standards across maritime operations. The role also provides the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of vetting policies, processes, and industry best practices.
The position can be based in Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Rotterdam depending on preferred location.
Your Key Responsibilities
Manage daily vessel vetting operations in Mainstay;
Review requests and approve or reject vessels against VAROPreem policies;
Coordinate vessel and office inspections with operators, inspectors and internal stakeholders;
Support the organisation with vessel related safety and environmental matters;
Manage vetting administration, including invoicing, reporting and statistics;
Maintain port, refinery and depot contact;
Represent VAROPreem in relevant industry forums.
Your Profile
Master Mariner with minimum five years of documented experience serving as a senior deck officer (Chief Officer/Master) aboard products, chemical, gas, or crude oil tankers;
Extensive experience in managing SIRE/CDI inspections on board vessels, preferably including involvement in preparing responses to observations raised during such inspections;
Strong background in maritime safety, compliance and operations;
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite;
Fluent in English and preferably German, Swedish and/or Dutch;
Driver’s license Class B;
Experience as a Superintendent, Fleet Manager, or in a shore-based position within a shipping company a sound knowledge of barges;
Deep understanding of regulations and industry standards governing inland waterway/deep-sea transportation;
Experience from gas-carriers is a must and a broad professional network is a plus;
You are a structured and analytical professional who approaches complex situations with calm, objectivity, and attention to detail;
Strong integrity and sound judgment enable you to make well-considered decisions independently, even when faced with differing opinions or external pressure;
You build credibility through clear communication, a collaborative mindset, and a respectful approach to working with others;
Able to combine expertise with humility, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.
